CCW 8-HOUR RENEWAL IN PERSON COURSE

California 8-Hour CCW Renewal Course

In-Person Renewal Training for Responsible CCW Holders

Our 8-hour California CCW Renewal Course is designed for current CCW holders who need to renew their concealed carry license and want more than a basic “check-the-box” class.

This is an in-person, hands-on, instructor-led course focused on safety, legal responsibility, practical carry skills, live-fire proficiency, and responsible decision-making.

Students will review California CCW laws, firearm safety, legal use of force, safe storage, legal transportation, where permit holders may carry, gear selection, range safety, live-fire drills, and qualification with each firearm listed on their permit.

What the Renewal Course Covers

This course is built around the renewal requirements under California Penal Code § 26165, including:

  • 🔹 Minimum 8-hour renewal training requirement
  • 🔹 Firearm safety and safe handling
  • 🔹 Shooting technique review
  • 🔹 Safe firearm storage
  • 🔹 Legal transportation and vehicle securing
  • 🔹 Laws on where permit holders may carry
  • 🔹 Permissible firearm use
  • 🔹 Use of lethal force in self-defense
  • 🔹 Written examination
  • 🔹 Live-fire shooting exercises
  • 🔹 Qualification with each firearm listed on the permit
  • 🔹 Required mental health and resources module completed online

🏫 Classroom Portion — Law, Responsibility, and Renewal Review

The classroom portion is designed to refresh the student’s understanding of the legal, practical, and personal responsibilities that come with carrying concealed.

This is not a passive video class. Our classroom is interactive, discussion-based, and built around real-life situations.

Students review:

  • California CCW renewal requirements
  • Penal Codes related to CCW holders and applicants
  • Use of force and use of deadly force
  • Brandishing and improper display of a firearm
  • Castle Doctrine as California defines it
  • Duty not to retreat as California defines it
  • Safe storage and legal transportation
  • Securing firearms in vehicles
  • Where CCW holders may and may not carry
  • Criminal and civil consequences after a defensive incident
  • The importance of following issuing-authority rules

🧠 Mental Health Module:
The required 1-hour mental health and mental health resources module is completed online at the applicant’s leisure. This allows students to complete that required portion separately while keeping the in-person course focused on law, safety, skills, and qualification.

🎯 Goal:
Students leave with a clear understanding of when force may be legally justified, when deadly force may be legally justified, when to avoid conflict, and why not using the firearm is often the best decision.

👀 Situational Awareness and Conflict Avoidance

Renewal students review real-world awareness and decision-making skills that apply to everyday carry.

We cover:

  • Awareness without paranoia
  • Recognizing abnormal behavior
  • Avoiding unnecessary confrontation
  • Maintaining distance
  • Identifying exits
  • Protecting family members in public
  • Understanding pre-attack indicators
  • Leaving safely when possible

The best defensive outcome is often avoiding the problem completely.

⚡ Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Stress Response

Students review how the body and mind respond under pressure.

Topics include:

  • Fight, flight, or freeze
  • Adrenaline response
  • Tunnel vision
  • Auditory exclusion
  • Loss of fine motor skills
  • Breathing under stress
  • Communication under stress
  • Decision-making during a high-pressure event

Responsible CCW holders must understand how stress affects performance and decision-making.

🎒 Gear, Holsters, Belts, and Carry Review

Renewal students often bring gear they already use. We review what works, what may need improvement, and what may create safety concerns.

Topics include:

  • Safe holster selection
  • Trigger guard protection
  • IWB and OWB carry options
  • Belt selection
  • Clothing and concealment
  • Printing
  • Carry position
  • Spare magazines
  • Red dot considerations
  • Common gear mistakes
  • Comfort versus safety

This is a hands-on discussion designed to help students make better everyday carry decisions.

🚨 After a Defensive Encounter

Students review what to think about after a defensive incident:

  1. Make sure the threat has stopped.
  2. Move to safety if possible.
  3. Check yourself and others for injuries.
  4. Call 911.
  5. Request police and medical assistance.
  6. Give your location clearly.
  7. Describe yourself to responding officers.
  8. Safely manage your firearm when appropriate.
  9. Point out evidence and witnesses when safe.
  10. Request legal counsel before giving a detailed statement.

A defensive encounter does not end when the immediate threat stops.

📝 Written Exam

Renewal applicants complete a written exam covering the classroom and renewal material.

The exam may include:

  • Firearm safety
  • CCW renewal requirements
  • Penal Code review
  • Use of force
  • Use of deadly force
  • Where permit holders may carry
  • Brandishing
  • Safe storage
  • Legal transportation
  • Vehicle securing
  • Mental health resources
  • Post-incident responsibilities

🎯 Range Portion — Safety, Skills, Live Fire, and Qualification

The range portion confirms that renewal applicants can safely handle and proficiently use each firearm they are licensed to carry.

This is a supportive, instructor-led range environment. Students are not rushed through qualification. Our instructors coach, correct, and help students perform safely and confidently.

🛡️ Safety and Medical Briefing

We begin the range portion with a mandatory safety and medical briefing.

We cover:

  • Range safety rules
  • Emergency procedures
  • Medical plan
  • Trauma kit location
  • Cease-fire procedures
  • Who will call 911
  • Who will guide emergency responders
  • Instructor roles during an emergency

The medical brief is one of the most valuable things we do because it prepares everyone to respond quickly and properly if there is an emergency.

🔍 Firearm Inspection and Paperwork Verification

Before training and qualification begin, instructors conduct a firearm look-over.

We confirm:

  • Firearms appear to be in safe working condition
  • Sights and optics are secure
  • Magazines and basic gear are usable
  • Firearms match the student’s paperwork
  • Serial numbers match the student’s listed firearms
  • Each firearm the student plans to qualify with is confirmed

This is part of running a professional, organized, and safe CCW renewal course.

🖐️ Dry Fire, Holster Work, and Fundamentals

Students complete a dry-fire and handling review before live ammunition is introduced.

We review:

  • Safe loading and unloading
  • Proper grip and stance
  • Sight alignment and sight picture
  • Trigger control
  • Follow-through
  • Drawing safely from the holster
  • Re-holstering safely
  • Muzzle discipline
  • Finger discipline
  • Basic red dot use and troubleshooting

Dry fire allows instructors to identify and correct issues before live fire begins.

🔥 Live-Fire Skill Review

Before qualification, students complete live-fire exercises to refresh safe handling and accuracy.

Live-fire drills may include:

  • Slow controlled accuracy fire
  • Grouping drills
  • Trigger control drills
  • Presentation from ready position
  • Controlled pairs
  • Reloading practice
  • Malfunction awareness
  • Shooting with each listed firearm
  • Instructor-led correction

The focus is safe handling, accuracy, control, and confidence.

✅ Live-Fire Qualification

Students complete qualification with each firearm they are licensed to carry.

The qualification is conducted in a professional and supportive group setting. Students are not placed alone in front of the class while everyone watches.

During qualification, instructors focus on:

  • Safe gun handling
  • Accuracy
  • Muzzle discipline
  • Trigger finger discipline
  • Accountability for every round fired
  • Qualification documentation

If a student struggles, instructors provide coaching when appropriate. Our goal is to prepare students, not pressure them.

Final Review and Certificate Completion

At the end of the course, instructors complete final documentation, review qualification results, answer questions, and discuss continuing practice recommendations.

Students who successfully complete the in-person training, written exam, live-fire exercises, online mental health module, and qualification receive their renewal course completion certificate for submission to their issuing authority.

Applicants should always confirm their local licensing authority’s renewal guidelines, as agencies may have additional requirements or procedures.
